Chapter Ten
Tami grinned. âI thought youâd never ask. Youâre going to try to catch the Santa?â
âAt least figure out who it is. Do you know Mrs. Duff in the office?â
âYeah, sheâs related to me.â
âAnd you know about the family trait?â
She gasped. âOh! Thatâs how she does it! I should have realized. You canât get away with anything at the school. Just think about doing something, and the principal is on your case. Sometimes I wish I got that gift, but then I think life is probably easier without it. Iâm not sure Iâd want to know what everyone in school was thinking. It would be distracting. You believe sheâs the Santa?â
âOr sheâs working with someone who is. I just want to test something. How good are you at focusing your mind? Could you think something without also thinking about the reason youâre thinking it?â
âI might be able to. Wes says it has to be verbalized thoughts. As long as you donât put the thoughts into words, he doesnât pick them up, and he hears the âloudestâ thoughts, so if youâre focusing on something, then thatâs all he hears. I learned when I was really little how to play cards with him. I had to sing a song in my head so I didnât always lose at Go Fish.â
âThen we need to come up with something you can think when you go by the office that might make the Secret Santa take action. Something good. I donât want to start a rumor or get someone targeted. Maybe something someone needs. It has to be obvious enough that weâll know if the Santa does it, but not so obvious that even someone who couldnât read minds might figure it out.â
We brainstormed, then decided that Tami was going to be worried about not being able to sell any of the tins of cookies she was supposed to have sold as a fundraiser for the computer club. âItâs true,â she said. âI wanted to have a âbring in your gear and weâll make sure itâs all updated and optimizedâ day and let people give us donations, but the teacher said there was too much liability potential in case we messed something up, so she went with a project from some school fundraiser catalog. I hate selling stuff, and those cookies always suck, anyway, so I havenât even tried to sell any. But Iâll get in trouble if I donât sell the minimum. What do you think the Santa would do about that?â
âI doubt sheâd be able to order anonymously. But you might get some money and a note to donate the cookies, or people will get notes telling them to buy from you.â
âIâll also have one of my friends think something about me that someone would want to warn me about, just to cover our bases.â She grinned. âThis is going to be fun.â
âBut only think this stuff around the office, and make sure that youâre not thinking about what youâre doing. Be very focused.
