Chapter Ten

Tami grinned. “I thought you’d never ask. You’re going to try to catch the Santa?”

“At least figure out who it is. Do you know Mrs. Duff in the office?”

“Yeah, she’s related to me.”

“And you know about the family trait?”

She gasped. “Oh! That’s how she does it! I should have realized. You can’t get away with anything at the school. Just think about doing something, and the principal is on your case. Sometimes I wish I got that gift, but then I think life is probably easier without it. I’m not sure I’d want to know what everyone in school was thinking. It would be distracting. You believe she’s the Santa?”

“Or she’s working with someone who is. I just want to test something. How good are you at focusing your mind? Could you think something without also thinking about the reason you’re thinking it?”

“I might be able to. Wes says it has to be verbalized thoughts. As long as you don’t put the thoughts into words, he doesn’t pick them up, and he hears the ‘loudest’ thoughts, so if you’re focusing on something, then that’s all he hears. I learned when I was really little how to play cards with him. I had to sing a song in my head so I didn’t always lose at Go Fish.”

“Then we need to come up with something you can think when you go by the office that might make the Secret Santa take action. Something good. I don’t want to start a rumor or get someone targeted. Maybe something someone needs. It has to be obvious enough that we’ll know if the Santa does it, but not so obvious that even someone who couldn’t read minds might figure it out.”

We brainstormed, then decided that Tami was going to be worried about not being able to sell any of the tins of cookies she was supposed to have sold as a fundraiser for the computer club. “It’s true,” she said. “I wanted to have a ‘bring in your gear and we’ll make sure it’s all updated and optimized’ day and let people give us donations, but the teacher said there was too much liability potential in case we messed something up, so she went with a project from some school fundraiser catalog. I hate selling stuff, and those cookies always suck, anyway, so I haven’t even tried to sell any. But I’ll get in trouble if I don’t sell the minimum. What do you think the Santa would do about that?”

“I doubt she’d be able to order anonymously. But you might get some money and a note to donate the cookies, or people will get notes telling them to buy from you.”

“I’ll also have one of my friends think something about me that someone would want to warn me about, just to cover our bases.” She grinned. “This is going to be fun.”

“But only think this stuff around the office, and make sure that you’re not thinking about what you’re doing. Be very focused.
